Entre le 11 et le 15 décembre 1862, plus de 200 000 hommes se sont affrontés à et autour de Fredericksburg, en Virginie. La bataille est universellement considérée comme un massacre unilatéral et une victoire confédérée retentissante.
Des soldats confédérés, facilement reconnaissables à leurs uniformes gris, sont représentés sur cet écusson brodé en train de combattre derrière un mur pavé le long de la Sunken Road. Une partie notable du troisième jour de combat.
Cet écusson circulaire brodé commémore les combats acharnés de Fredericksburg qui ont fait plus de 18 000 victimes.
