Un Abraham Lincoln ému a prononcé ces mots le 11 février 1861, alors qu'il disait adieu aux citoyens de Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln quittait ses amis et voisins de 24 ans, et la maison dans laquelle lui et sa famille vivaient depuis 17 ans, pour servir en tant que président d'une nation au bord de la guerre civile.
Construite à l'origine en 1839 comme un cottage d'un étage et demi, la maison Lincoln a ensuite été agrandie en une maison de deux étages pour accueillir leur famille grandissante. Restaurée à son apparence de 1860, la maison est maintenant la pièce maîtresse du lieu historique national de Lincoln Home et révèle Lincoln en tant que mari, père, politicien et président élu. Cet écusson affiche le lieu historique national de Lincoln Home.
