Vicksburg National Military Park commemorates Siege of Vicksburg, May 18 – July 4, 1863, and its significance as a critical turning point of the Civil War.
The Arch was a sign of reconciliation between the North and South, constructed of Stone Mountain Granite, it was funded with money remaining from the 1917 U.S. Congress sponsored veteran's reunion held at Vicksburg The Arch originally stood astride Clay Street until in 1967 it was declared a traffic hazard and moved to its present site in the park.
