On April 6, 1862, Confederates attacked Grant's unsuspecting Union army at Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River. The next day, reinforced Federal troops retook lost ground near Shiloh Church, forcing Southerners to retreat to their strategic base at Corinth, Mississippi.
Three decades later, battle veterans from North and South successfully lobbied to preserve the setting of Bloody Shiloh, honoring the 24,000 soldiers killed, wounded, or missing in the battle.
Today the area is preserved as Shiloh National Military Park, which includes Shiloh National Cemetery.
