Union forces had taken Chattanooga, prized as a gateway to the deep south. Union forces were later defeated in the Battle of Chickamauga and placed under siege in the town of Chattanooga for two months. With the arrival of reinforcements, the Union Army broke out by driving the Confederates from positions surrounding the town of Chattanooga. These actions secured Chattanooga for the Union, providing the supply base and gateway needed for the Union thrust southward the following spring.
Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park honors both of those battles and strives to both preserve and interpret the history for future generations. Your purchase helps support that goal.
