La ''Statue de la Liberté éclairant le monde'' a été donnée au peuple des États-Unis par le peuple français en reconnaissance d'une amitié établie pendant la Révolution américaine.
Conçue par Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, la statue est construite de fines feuilles de cuivre, pas plus épaisses que deux centimes placés ensemble, sur un pylône de fer massif et une charpente squelettique conçue par Alexandre Gustave Eiffel.
La Statue de la Liberté a été consacrée le 28 octobre 1886, désignée comme monument national en 1924 et restaurée pour son centenaire le 4 juillet 1986. Au fil des ans, la Statue est devenue une icône internationale de la liberté, la plus reconnaissable symbole de la démocratie dans le monde.
