Le 6 avril 1862, les Confédérés attaquèrent l'armée de l'Union de Grant, qui ne se doutait de rien, à Pittsburg Landing, sur la rivière Tennessee. Le lendemain, des troupes fédérales renforcées reprirent le terrain perdu près de Shiloh Church, forçant les Sudistes à se retirer vers leur base stratégique de Corinth, dans le Mississippi.
Trois décennies plus tard, les vétérans de la bataille du Nord et du Sud ont fait pression avec succès pour préserver le décor de Bloody Shiloh, en hommage aux 24 000 soldats tués, blessés ou disparus lors de la bataille.
Aujourd'hui, la zone est préservée en tant que parc militaire national de Shiloh, qui comprend le cimetière national de Shiloh.
