Le site historique national James A. Garfield a été créé en 1980 pour retracer la vie et l'époque du 20e président des États-Unis. Garfield fut le dernier président né dans une cabane en rondins. Au cours de son bref mandat, il s'attaqua à la corruption, lança une réforme de la fonction publique et rétablit une partie du prestige de la fonction présidentielle perdu pendant la période de la Reconstruction. Son mandat commença le 4 mars 1881 mais fut interrompu lorsqu'il fut abattu par un assassin le 2 juillet. Le président Garfield mourut le 19 septembre 1881.
