Le Cape Hatteras National Seashore a été créé par le Congrès comme premier littoral national des États-Unis. Situé en Caroline du Nord, le long d'une bande de 112 kilomètres d'îles-barrières connues sous le nom d'Outer Banks, le littoral présente de nombreux vestiges spectaculaires d'une époque où les marins du monde entier craignaient ce littoral dangereux comme le cimetière de l'Atlantique.
Cette pièce de collection représente le phare de Cape Hatteras, avec son design distinctif en forme de poteau de barbier noir et blanc, sur fond de ciel bleu vif. Un oiseau de rivage, qui dépend de la terre protégée pour ses sites de nidification, s'envole vers la droite.
